TPD DUI checkpoint results in nine arrests

The Torrance Police Department’s Traffic Division conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on December 19th, 2014, between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

DUI/Drivers License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries.  A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired.  Checkpoints bring more awareness and encourage everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

A total of 2,050 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.  Of those, 1,350 were screened by officers.  Seventeen drivers were given field sobriety tests and nine were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Twenty-six drivers were cited for traffic violations, including seven who were driving on suspended licenses. Fifteen unlicensed drivers were also cited.  A total of fifteen vehicles were towed, which included the DUI arrests and those who were unlicensed drivers or were driving on suspended licenses.

As part of the Los Angeles County Avoid DUI Task Force, the Torrance Police Department will be conducting another DUI saturation patrol in March of 2015, in our ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries on our streets and highways.

This checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!
