LASD and Volunteers Assemble Holiday Gift Bags for Female Inmates

Sheriff’s Department Personnel, Local Organizers and Community Volunteers Create an Assembly Line to Prepare 2,000 Inmate Holiday Gift Bags with Donated Items.

In December, 2013, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department personnel, in conjunction with the Action Committee for Women in Prison Project (ACWIP), presented over 2,000 holiday gift bags to women incarcerated in the Century Regional Detention Facility (CRDF).  The holiday gift bags contained personal-sized servings of coffee, tea and candy; travel-sized soap, shampoo kits, lotion, and hair care items; note paper with envelopes; and Christmas cards.

This year, with the hope of continuing the 2013 presentation as a tradition, Sheriff’s Department employees and community volunteers came to the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building in Monterey Park on Thursday, December 18, 2014, and formed an assembly line.  They worked a five-hour circuit to prepare 2,000 gift bags for female inmates to receive this holiday season.  The assemblers were assisted by Sheriff Jim McDonnell, Assistant Sheriff Terri McDonald, Sheriff’s personnel from the Civilian Training Unit, Inmate Reception Center-Document Control Records, and the Maximizing Education Reaching Individual Transformation (MERIT) Program Continuum; and members from various Los Angeles County-based groups and organizations, including the Civilian Advisory Committee and the Agape International Spiritual Center.

Everyone involved in the process was excited and ready to work, hopeful the small token would remind the inmates of the spirit of the season and bring them some holiday cheer.

Items included in this year’s gift bags were donated by Target Corporation, Sheriff’s Department employees and private citizens.  Thousands of food, toiletry and stationery items similar to 2013 filled the bags and were valued at approximately $10,000.

Gloria Killian, ACWIP Director, also attended the event and worked on the assembly line.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell said, “Although the ACWIP project is in its fifteenth year of bringing this type of joy to women incarcerated in the jail and prison systems during the holiday season, this is the second time that the program has been expanded to include the assembly and delivery of Christmas packages to women housed in our Los Angeles County jail system.”
