Volunteers sought for the West Essex Domestic Violence Response Team. Interested? Details on Facebook and Webpage.

The West Essex Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) is a group of specially trained volunteer advocates available to meet confidentially with victims of domestic violence. Members work in conjunction with police, meeting with victims of domestic violence at their local police department to provide support, information and referral. The advocates also discuss a victim's rights in regards to obtaining a temporary restraining order. The identities of DVRT volunteers are kept anonymous, are available 24 hours a day to meet with victims and are trained to empower victims to make decisions about their lives.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, reside in one of the West Essex towns, have access to transportation, posses a valid NJ driver's license, be willing to serve on an on-call basis, have no criminal history or history as a defendant in a domestic violence matter and submit to a background investigation.

Completing a 40 hour training course is mandatory. The course will be run by the Rachel Coalition one night per week for 14 weeks beginning in March on Tuesdays from 6 p.m until 9 p.m.

To request an application to become a DVRT member contact Sgt. John Belotta at the North Caldwell Police Department 973-226-0800. Applications must be picked up in person and returned by January 31, 2015 to enter the March class.
