Updated Press Release Regarding Officer Involved Shooting Incident on Jeffrey Dr.

Updated – Name release of suspect-decedent in Officer Involved Shooting incident

On Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at approximately 10:40 PM, officers of the Costa Mesa Police Department responded to the 3000 block of Jeffrey Drive on information received regarding a subject wanted on out of state felony warrants. Officers contacted the subject and verified he was the individual sought for extradition under the warrants. As the officers went to arrest the individual, he became violently combative and brandished a handgun. A physical altercation resulted where shots were fired by both the individual and an officer.

The decedent-suspect’s name was initially withheld pending notification to next of kin. The suspect in this incident is identified as:

Julius L. Pinson, Age-48, residing in Costa Mesa

Pinson was a wanted person on felony arrest warrants out of New Mexico and Texas, as follows:

New Mexico
Warrants as suspect in a 2011 case involving the Criminal Sexual Penetration of a minor, as well as an unrelated 2011 felony embezzlement case where he had fled New Mexico.
Texas
Warrants as suspect in an Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, as well as an additional embezzlement case.

The joint investigation into this incident is an on-going effort by the Costa Mesa Police Department and the Special Assignment Unit of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, in conjunction with the Orange County Coroner’s Office.
