Sheriff's HOPE Team secures housing for Victorville/Mojave Riverbed homeless population ahead of closure

DATE/TIME: Thursday, December 18, 2015

INCIDENT: Sheriff's HOPE Team secures housing for Mojave Riverbed homeless population ahead of closure.

LOCATION: Mojave Riverbed Victorville

SUMMARY:
In anticipation of the City of Victorville's closure of the Mojave Riverbed, the Sheriff's HOPE team has secured 40 HUD based housing vouchers along with over 30 additional housing options to assist the Mojave Riverbed homeless population prior to the closure. In addition, the HOPE team has begun outreach events in the riverbed, collaborating with Department of Behavioral Health and other agencies, which will continue throughout the closure process.
At an outreach event that occurred on Tuesday at Stoddard Wells Road, Daniel, a homeless subject pictured in a recent Victor Valley Daily Press article, was provided a HUD housing voucher for both he and his wife, effectively moving his family beyond homelessness.

The City's long-term closure plan, which is based upon other successful models, includes multiple phases that began with an extensive outreach period by the Sheriff's HOPE team and other homeless resource providers. The closure will not begin to take effect until March 2015 and will close only a portion of the Riverbed while outreach continues to the remainder of the homeless population. Closure of other portions of the riverbed will not take place until mid 2015. Specifically, the goal of the Sheriff's HOPE team, in collaboration with the City of Victorville and the City Police Department, is not to effect evictions, but to help move the Mojave Riverbed population beyond homelessness.
