“Police Blotter” Highlights – Ending December 14, 2014

WEAPONS ARRESTS

On Tuesday, Dec. 9th, around 11 p.m., Ofc. Mangan was dispatched to the area of Hilton St. and Washington Ave. for a report of suspicious circumstances. He and supporting officers approached two males sitting in a vehicle. A probation searched yielded a switchblade and metal knuckles. The 22-year-old driver, Juval Avila out of Tracy, was arrested for possession of a switchblade in a vehicle.

WEEK IN REVIEW

On Wednesday, Dec. 10th, around 8:30 p.m., multiple street racing car clubs and their members packed the Union Landing shopping center. It was estimated there were about 300 vehicles an
300 to 400 spectators. Most of the attendees were cooperative, and those who were not receive citations. Union City police officers, with the help of CHP, cleared the shopping center by about 11 p.m.

On Thursday, Dec. 11th, around 1 a.m., Ofc. Fonseca responded to a burglary alarm at Babies R Us business in Union Landing. An unknown suspect pried open the sliding exit doors, but was unable to
breach the secondary security doors into the store. There was no loss.

On Friday, Dec. 12th, around 9 p.m., Ofc. Vasicek was dispatched to the report of an in-progress assault with a deadly weapon in the 4800 block of Delores Dr. A verbal argument between two brothers
turned physical, and one of the brothers struck the other in the head with a coffee cup. The 18-year-old Union City resident was arrested.

BURGLARIES AND CAR THEFTS

From Monday, Dec. 8th through Sunday, Dec. 14th, there were four reported residential burglaries and five reported auto burglaries. Four of the auto burglaries occurred at Union
Landing, and involved window smashes to steal items that were left in plain sight in the vehicle. The fifth auto burglary occurred in a residential neighborhood. The unknown suspect smashed window,
ransacked the vehicle’s interior, and stole the garage door opener.

SAFETY TIP: Never leave garage door openers inside your vehicle, especially if you park it outside.

From Monday, Dec. 8th through Sunday, Dec. 14th, there were eight reported vehicle thefts. of the time of this report, three of the vehicles have been recovered. One of the recovered vehicles was stolen when it was “warming up” in front of the victim’s residence in the early morning hours.

SAFETY TIP: Never leave a running vehicle unattended.

EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHTS

Detective Czar Valdehueza was selected as the Officer of the Month for December. Detective Valdehueza was nominated and selected for his work with a team of detectives last month, when an unknown suspect made threats to “shoot up” James Logan High School. Det. Valdehueza’s investigative actions helped to identify the suspect, ultimately discovering that the threats had been made as a
hoax.
