Holiday Home Security Tips
This is the most festive time of year. Everyone is getting ready to spend some time with friends and family to celebrate the holidays. However, there are some who will capitalize on the good fortune and good nature of others. We don't want you to become a victim this holiday season, so here are some Holiday Home Security Tips from your Gardena Police Department:
-Consider placing your Christmas tree away from the window. Although the lights look beautiful shining through the window, it also alerts burglars that there is easy access to the gifts … right on the other side of a broken window.
-If heading out of town for the holidays, place timers on your lights to make it look like someone is home. Use at least one timer per floor, in the living room or a bedroom. Keep the lights on from about 9 p.m. until about 1 a.m.
-Have a neighbor collect your mail and newspapers. Particularly at this time of year when packages with holiday gifts are being sent, it’s a good idea to have someone remove these items from your porch so that passing burglars don’t notice that they’re piling up while you’re away.
-Keep the exterior of your home well lit. Use motion detector spotlights.
-Refrain from hiding spare keys around the house.
-And, of course, lock all of your windows and doors before leaving on vacation, or anytime you’re away from home. This seems like common sense, but you would be surprised how many burglars gain entry this way. Notify GPD if you will be away from home for an extended amount of time.
Take care and Happy Holidays!
