Advisory

The Holiday Season brings an uptick in vehicle burglaries

The Gilroy Police Department has responded to numerous auto burglaries at commercial center parking lots within the past weeks. Most victims reported leaving personal/ valuable items in plain view. In the majority of cases a window was broken to gain immediate access to the property. We ask community members to be vigilant and report suspicious subjects and/ or vehicles that may appear to be looking into vehicles or casing parking lots at busy commercial centers. We also offer the following simple reminders that can aid in the prevention of auto burglaries:

• Don’t leave valuable items in plain sight. Shopping bags, GPS Systems, purses, backpacks, lap top cases are all items that have been stolen. It only takes a thief seconds to break a window and gain access to your belongings. Docking stations are good indicators that pieces of electronics may still be contained within the vehicle. When possible, remove them as well.

• If you must leave valuable items in your car while out and about, place items out of sight before reaching your destination or move them inconspicuously.

• Lock your vehicle and try to park in well-lit areas during the evening hours.

Anyone that may have recently witnessed a burglary is urged to contact the Gilroy Police Department at (408) 846-0350. The majority of these burglaries occurred during peak shopping hours. We thank you in advance.
