Safety Tips for Bad-Weather Driving

Safety Tips for Bad-Weather Driving

1) Have a Plan: Plan out your route and be prepared. Taking a few moments before you leave to set up a pre designated route, can make your venture onto the roadway less stressful and even save you time. Having nonperishable food items, water, raingear, first aid kit, extra warm clothing and blankets onboard when making long road trips is also a good idea just in case unforeseen problems arise.
2) Conduct a Pre-Trip Inspection: Inspect your vehicle and make sure wiper blades, tires, and fluid levels are good to go before heading out. Nothing is worse than being stranded, so take the time to look your vehicle over.
3) Obey the Rules of the Road: Simple but often overlooked, follow the rules of road and obey the road signs. Obeying the road signs could save you and your loved ones lives.
4) Take Breaks Often: Many studies have been completed addressing the dangers of driving while tired or sleepy. Take advantage of rest stops. Taking a break from driving, resting, or stretching your legs will make you more alert.
5) Slow Down: Plan for extra time on your trips, don’t be in a hurry, and watch your vehicle speed. Simply put, the faster you drive the longer it takes you to stop, so slow down, and give yourself time to react to changes in traffic and roadway conditions. The important part is arriving at your destination safely.
6) Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Be mindful of other motorists, share the road, and be patient. Give yourself extra time to react by giving yourself extra space. Be aware of changing traffic and roadway conditions, such as, rain, snow, and ice. Watch for black ice.
7) Wear Your Seatbelt: Buckle Up! Not only is it the law but it can save your life!

In this world you may be but one person but to one person you may be the world! Be safe and arrive at your destination. The Anderson Police Department would like to remind you to be safe in your travels and have a Happy Holiday Season.
