Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over: Countywide Holiday DUI Crackdown in Effect Through January 1.

With the holidays upon us and festivities soon to begin, the Los Altos Police Department would like to remind motorists to never get behind the wheel after drinking and to watch out for those around you.

The Los Altos Police Department, along with all Santa Clara County law enforcement agencies, will be on high alert, cracking down on drunk drivers as part of an annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over public safety campaign, which runs December 12 through January 1, 2015. All available officers will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and routine patrols looking for tell-tale signs of impaired drivers.

Following these easy steps, drivers can enjoy a safe and festive holiday without jeopardizing their lives and the lives of others:

  - Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.

  - Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home.

  - If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation to get home safely.

  - If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take the keys and help that person make other arrangements to get to where he or she is going safely.

  - If hosting a holiday party, have plenty of non-alcoholic beverages on hand and consider serving only non-alcoholic beverages as the party winds down.

Always report suspected drunk drivers by dialing 9-1-1. When calling, it is helpful to note the make, model and color of the driver’s vehicle along with their location and direction of travel.

Thank you for helping to keep Los Altos streets safe and free of impaired drivers.
