Body found in the ocean off Salt Point State Park in Sonoma County positively identified as missing surfer from Pacifica

On Friday December 5, 2014 at about noon, a crewmember aboard a commercial fishing boat called the US Coast Guard reporting seeing someone floating lifeless in the waters about a mile off Salt Point State Park.

The US Coast Guard responded and recovered the body. The deceased was an adult wearing a wetsuit. It was clear that the person had been in the water for quite some time.

The US Coast Guard transported the decedent to their base at Bodega Bay and called the Sheriff’s Office. The resident Deputy responded to the scene and soon a Detective from the Coroner’s Office took over the investigation.

Because the man carried no documents, it was difficult to positively identify him. There had been no one reported missing in Sonoma County recently fitting his description. There had been, however, a missing surfer out of San Mateo County weeks prior.

Initially, his fingerprints were available, but a comparison proved to be inadequate to positively confirm his identity. The Coroner’s Office enlisted the expertise of a forensic odontologist to verify dental records.

The deceased man is identified as Brook Warren Keyon, of Shingle Springs, CA. The 52 year old was reported missing after he was last seen surfing in the waters off Pacifica at dusk on November 23, 1014. His vehicle was parked in an adjacent lot and Pacifica Police Department conducted the original investigation.

Keyon’s family has been informed of his death.
