Tips for Driving Safely in the Rain

1.       Turn on Your Headlights- It’s the law in all states to turn headlights on when visibility is low, and many states also require having the headlights on when the windshield wipers are in use. Make sure your wiper blades are clean and not worn.

2.       Slow Down- Keep in mind that posted speed limits may not apply when it rains, as limits are determined based on ideal conditions with little traffic. Adjust your speed during the rain and allow more time for travel.

3.       Stay toward the middle lanes - water tends to pool in the outside lanes.

4.       Drive in the tracks of the vehicle in front of you; but do not drive so close that the spray from their tires impairs or limits your vision.

5.       Avoid using your brakes; if possible, take your foot off the accelerator to slow down.

6.       Never drive through moving water if you can't see the ground through it; your car could be swept off the road. When driving through puddles, go slow. If it's deeper than the bottom of your doors, turn around and find another route.

7.       Turn off cruise control- You might think it’ll help you stay at one steady speed, but if you hydroplane while you’re in cruise control, your car will actually go faster.

8.       Beware of Hydroplaning- If you start to hydroplane, let off the accelerator slowly and steer straight until you regain control.

9.       Be Alert- You should constantly be aware of what is going on around you and your vehicle.
