20th annual "Shop with a Cop" event to take place on December 13, 2014 at Green Bay area Shopko stores.

GREEN BAY, WI (December 9, 2014)– The 20th annual “Shop with a Cop” event will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2014. In addition to giving the children a unique opportunity to shop for presents for themselves and family members with a member of a local police department, the program helps to foster positive community relations between law enforcement and elementary school children. Over 160 children will participate in this year’s event.

The day begins with a breakfast attended by the children and the law enforcement volunteers during which the children receive gifts of new hats and gloves. The children and officers are then transported to area Shopko stores where the officers assist the children as they select and wrap the perfect gifts for their family members.

“Shopko is proud to support the Shop with a Cop program,” said Peter McMahon, Shopko CEO. “There are many programs this time of the year in which individuals and families receive gifts. The focus of this event has always been about the giving aspect of the holiday season. In many cases, this will be the first time that the children have had an opportunity to buy gifts for their family members. Our hope is that the children who participate will learn through this experience that the holidays are not about how much you get, but rather the joy in what you can give.”

This program is made possible by the men and women in law enforcement, program sponsors, and individuals in the community who have contributed to the program. Major sponsors for the Shop with a Cop event are the Green Bay Press-Gazette and Gannett Foundation, Shopko and the Shopko Foundation, Lamers Bus Lines, Promotional Designs, Green Bay and De Pere McDonalds, Ambrosius Studios, Luke Bingham Photography, Saranac Glove, Mark Hawkins Photojournalism, Kwik Trip, Wood’s Wheels, Brown County Community Women’s Club and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Green Bay.

Officers and civilian workers from the following police departments have volunteered their time to participate: Green Bay Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Department, Ashwaubenon Public Safety Department, De Pere Police Department, Oneida Police Department, Hobart/Lawrence Police Department, Pulaski Police Department, Denmark Police Department, Seymour Police Department, UWGB Police Department and Wrightstown Police Department.
