Weather Alert for Sonoma County Junior College District

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind and flash flood warning for Wednesday and Thursday!
Heavy rainfall is expected throughout the Bay Area, especially in the North Bay. The volume of rainfall is expected to overwhelm waterways and roadway drainage systems, leading to flash flooding. Additionally, high winds from 20-40 MPH are expected, with gusts up to 40-60 MPH.
The following are some tips for your commute and while you are ON CAMPUS

Safe Driving Tips
• Freeways will often flood nearest to the roadway edges, especially on elevated roadways with walls on both sides. Avoid the outside lanes, especially at night.
• Never drive through standing water. You never know how deep the water is, and what may be lurking beneath the surface.
• The primary method of avoiding collisions during severe weather is to slow down. Slower speeds prevent hydroplaning, which often leads to crashes. Extra following distance will also help if someone crashes ahead.
• Whenever your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should be as well. Often, vehicles are not visible without head and taillights.
• Prepare your vehicle now. Replace windshield wipers if necessary, check your brakes and your fluids. The worst time to break down is during heavy weather. Towing services are usually overwhelmed with collisions, and response times are delayed.
• Be extra alert for pedestrians, not just in roadways, but in parking lots. Give windows a chance to de-fog before backing out of parking spaces. Roll your windows up and down to clear standing water off them.
• If you experience an emergency on the freeway, call 9-1-1 (CHP) from your mobile phone. If you are on city streets calling the agency directly, rather dialing 911, will get you quicker service and not unnecessarily clog emergency lines. If you haven’t already programmed the direct phone numbers of local agencies whose jurisdiction you drive through daily into your phone, now is the time! If you experience a minor collision, please move out of the roadway as soon as possible to prevent secondary collisions and to keep our roadways moving!
Safety Around the College District
• Be alert to your surroundings, especially slippery areas, falling debris, downed power lines, etc.
• As a pedestrian, do not assume drivers see you, better yet, assume they don’t see you! When crossing in a crosswalk across multiple lanes of a roadway, make sure vehicles in each lane stop before crossing into the next lane.
• Be mindful of the high wind (especially gusts) when outdoors, entering/exiting buildings or vehicles etc.
• Observe any barricades or taped off zones.
• Report anything unusual to Facilities Operations at:
(707) 527-4231 for Santa Rosa, PSTC and the Southwest Santa Rosa Center;
(707)778-4110 for Petaluma;
(707) 535-3702 for Shone Farm;
(707) 527-1000 District Police for emergencies or after hour notification.
