Upcoming Storm Information for Fremont Residents and Businesses #FremontStormWatch

The City of Fremont is monitoring a powerful storm system that is expected to move into the area late tonight.  A period of strong and possibly damaging winds is forecast to last through midday Thursday. City Staff have inspected problem flood areas and are clearing debris to minimize storm drain blockages. Public Works crews are also prepared to conduct regular patrols and inspections of known hotspots to identify potential flooding early and to focus resources accordingly to prevent larger problems.  The City of Fremont will adjust staffing levels accordingly as the events unfold.  General storm related and safety messages will be communicated via the City’s website and social media accounts including Nixle, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (follow #FremontStormWatch).

Storm drains have limited capacity and flooding may occur in low lying areas.  Since Public Works crews may be delayed in responding to reports of flooding, based on the severity of the storm, residents can help by:

• Checking drainage systems and removing debris as necessary.
• Collect and properly disposing of heavy leaf falls before the storm occurs.
• Remove leaves and debris from storm drain inlets with a rake or shovel.
• Use sandbags and plastic sheeting to protect flood-prone entrances to homes.
• Drive slowly and carefully, particularly where water has accumulated on roadways.  Never drive into a large body of standing water.
• Staying tuned to local radio and television news sources for the latest weather information and the City’s website and social media accounts for Fremont specific updates.

Fremont residents and businesses may pick up a maximum of 10 sandbags (per household/business), if needed, at the following locations beginning Wednesday morning.  Bags will be provided, but you must bring your own shovel.

• Fremont Fire Station 10 - 5001 Deep Creek Rd.
• Fremont Fire Station 5 - 55 Hackamore Ln.
• City of Fremont Corporation Yard - 42551 Osgood Road (M-F 8am – 5pm only)

This week’s projected winter storm represents the first significant winter storm of the year. Though it has been several years since we have experienced a storm like this due to the drought the City of Fremont has effectively managed similar or worse storms in years past. City Staff are prepared and will closely monitor the events as they unfold adjusting staffing levels, emergency response and public messaging accordingly. The City Manager’s Office in coordination with the Police and Fire Department’s Public Information Officers will provide our community with general information and safety messages throughout the duration of the storm.
