At about 11:50 PM, December 5th, Escondido Police responded to calls of a serious traffic collision in the area of James Street and East Valley Parkway. Patrol Officers arrived on scene within three minutes and found a single vehicle, a Toyota pick-up truck, had crashed into a fixed pillar. The driver of the vehicle was unconscious and had sustained significant injuries. A passenger in the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The driver, identified as Jose De Jesus Garcia, 19 years old, of Escondido, was transported to Palomar Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries.
During the subsequent investigation it was determined that a second vehicle had been involved in the collision, but fled the scene prior to the arrival of the police. The vehicle was located and the registered owner was identified as Juan Rebollar, 18 years old, of Escondido. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Rebollar.

Rebollar was arrested and later booked into Vista Detention Facility for Murder.
