Recently a Newark resident received a telephone call from a person claiming to be with a furnace repair company. The caller claimed to have repaired the home owner’s furnace in the past. The resident agreed to have the caller respond to service/tune-up the furnace for $49.95.

Upon arrival the service technician immediately told the home owner that his home’s entire duct work needed replacing. The homeowner asked for the company’s name and references. The technician proved a company name and website to visit. The home owner researched the alleged company via the internet. He learned that people had fallen victim to a scam very similar to what was trying to be perpetrated. The homeowner told the technician of his findings and the potential scam. The technician quickly left the scene.

The home owner’s distrust of the situation probably helped him from being taken of his money. Scam artists often carry fake credentials and appear to be legitimate. Remember, if you did not initiate or schedule a service call from a repair company; please take the time to verify the company and worker’s identity before allowing them into your home.

As a reminder, never open your door to a stranger, but do acknowledge you’re home through a closed door. Be wary of door-to-door solicitations for home repairs, as these are often con-artists who will charge you for a repair that is never made or simply want access into your home and your property for other illicit purposes (such as burglary or identity theft).
