Advisory

Freezing rain causes dangerous travel conditions for morning rush hour.

During the morning hours of December 2nd troopers assigned to the Indianapolis State Police Post responded to more than 75 crashes on area interstates across the greater Indianapolis area. At least 30 of those crashes resulted in personal injury, however no life threatening injuries were reported. Areas affected were mostly south and east of downtown.

At times stretches of I-65, I-70 and I-465 were closed due to multiple crashes and icy conditions. Aside from crashes, troopers also responded to several calls for vehicles that slide off the road as well as disabled vehicles and semi tractor/trailer vehicles that were unable to climb ramps and hills due to icy roads.

The Indiana Department of Transportation responded quickly to treat affected roadways and all greater Indianapolis roads are presently open to traffic.

Drivers are reminded to start their trips earlier and to drive slower during inclement weather. Also avoid following too close by simply leaving more distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front to ensure safe arrival at your destination. Please remember, every modern vehicle on the road today comes with built-in crash avoidance signal devices. They are called turn signals, but they only work when drivers use them. Just the simple act of signaling a lane change on the interstate can prevent a traffic crash.
