Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Honoring Fallen Heroes with Project Blue Light Ceremony

This message from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy has been shared as a courtesy by the Indiana State Police:

Plainfield, IN. December 2, 2014: The 17th Annual Project Blue Light Ceremony will be held at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, 5402 Sugar Grove Road, Plainfield, Indiana on Tuesday, December 2rd at 7:00 p.m., on the grounds of the Academy. This year’s program will be hosted by the 74th Indiana State Police Recruit School and the Academy’s 204th Basic Session. The Academy’s Executive Director, Rusty Goodpaster reports, “The fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice since last year’s Ceremony and whose names will be added to the ‘Roll Call of Heroes’ are:”

Deputy Jacob Calvin, Tipton County Sheriff’s Department, End of Watch: June 28, 2014. Deputy Calvin was killed in a single vehicle crash while responding to a crash. His vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times, ejecting him from the car. Deputy Calvin had served the Tipton County Sheriff’s Department for 2 ½ years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of 6 years, where he served in Iraq as a military policeman.

Officer Perry Renn, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, End of Watch: July 5, 2014. Officer Renn was shot and killed while responding to a report of shots fired near the intersection of East 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue. When Officer Renn and another officer arrived, they encountered a subject in a nearby alley. The subject opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, fatally striking Officer Renn. The subject, who had a lengthy criminal history, was critically wounded and apprehended. Officer Renn was a U.S. Army veteran and had served the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for 22 years.

Patrolman Jeffery Westerfield, Gary Police Department, End of Watch: July 6, 2014. A citizen called 911 at 5:50am after discovering Patrolman Westerfield suffering from gunshot wounds in his patrol car, with multiple shell casings found outside his vehicle. The exact circumstances of his death are unknown. He had responded to the same area on a call earlier in the night. Three subjects were taken into custody in connection with Patrolman Westerfield’s murder the following day. Patrolman Westerfield had served with the Gary Police Department for 19 years.

Patrolman Nickolaus Schultz, Merrillville Police Department, End of Watch: September 7, 2014. Patrolman Nickolaus Schultz succumbed to gunshots wounds sustained 2 days earlier while investigating reports of an evicted tenant moving back into his condominium on the 8200 block of Lincoln Circle. The subject was wearing body armor and ambushed responding officers, striking Patrolman Schultz in the head. Then man then committed suicide. Patrolman Schultz was transported to a medical center where he was kept on life support until passing away 2 days later. Patrolman Schultz had served with the Merrillville Police Department for 13 months.
