High Winds Blow Semi Over
Lake County-High winds this afternoon blew a semi and its empty trailer over on I-65 and sent the driver to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Martin Benner revealed, at approximately 12:15 p.m., this Monday, November 24, 2014, afternoon, a 2009 Sterling semi pulling an empty box trailer was south bound on I-65 in the right lane at the 237 ½ mile marker (this is 2 ½ miles south of the Lowell exit) when the driver, Dan G. Rodriquez, 41 of Hobart, stated he felt his trailer move left. A strong gust of wind lifted the empty box trailer and rolled the tractor and trailer onto its driver’s side. They both then slid across I-65 southbound to the right, with the tractor coming to rest on the outer grassy embankment and the trailer blocking the outer shoulder and part of the right lane. The semi was owned by Conway Freight out of Richmond, Indiana.
Rodriquez who was wearing his seat belt was taken to saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point with non-life threatening injuries. The semi and trailer sustained over $25,000 in damage.
South bound lanes were blocked for a short while the semi and trailer were up-righted and towed and Rodriquez was transported from the scene.
