Advisory

Phone Scam: Impostors claiming to be IRS Agents, DWP, and Law Enforcement calling residents demanding immediate payment.

It has come to the attention of the Beverly Hills Police Department that residents of Beverly Hills have been receiving calls from and have even become victimized by IRS impostors, Department of Water and power impostors, and Law Enforcement impostors.

These impostors "cold call" residents claiming they are behind on their taxes, water bill, or a family member is in jail and needs bail money, demanding immediate payment in the form of a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.

These sophisticated scammers are armed with enough information, such as the last four digits of a person's Social Security number, to convince victims to wire them money.

These scammers have recently begun targeted Beverly Hills, as indicated by the recent influx of reports taken by this agency.

Callers claim to be from the IRS, DWP, or Law Enforcement agency and tell people they must be paid immediately using a pre-paid debit card or through a wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, lack of services, or the possibility of a family member remaining in jail.

If you have received this type of call or have become victimized by an impostor, please contact the Beverly Hills Police Department at (310) 550-4951.
