Petaluma Police conduct Death Investigation at Steamer Landing
On Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 9:40AM, Petaluma Police were called to Steamer Landing, a City park on Copeland Street, for a reported gunshot with a man down in the parking lot.
Witnesses reported they had seen a man park his vehicle in the lot, turn on his emergency flashers, and place a note on the window. He then placed a tarp on the ground in front of his vehicle. The witnesses called 9-1-1 when they heard a gunshot.
Responding officers found a 78-year-old Petaluma man wrapped in the tarp and determined he died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The note on the window said "Call Police".
The park was closed for approximately two hours while investigators from the Police Department and Coroner's Office conducted the investigation.
The name of the deceased person will not be released by the Petaluma Police Department. The Coroner's Office will handle notification to family members and will respond to any further inquiries.
