Trooper’s Respond to Crash Involving Livestock

Trooper’s Respond to Crash Involving Livestock

Indianapolis, IN- Last night, at approximately 6:17 p.m., troopers from the Indianapolis Post responded to a single vehicle semi-tractor trailer crash on the ramp from I-465 NB to I-74 WB involving livestock.

Preliminary investigation revealed that John Carlisle, 34, was operating a 2014 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer with a livestock trailer on the I-465 NB ramp to I-74 WB. Investigating Trooper Neal Beiriger said witness statements and evidence at the scene indicated that Carlisle was traveling too fast for the ramp. As the semi-tractor trailer entered the ramp the trailer tipped over causing the tractor to overturn also.

The trailer, loaded with 2,058 pigs, was not compromised and all of the swine were contained. Approximately 300 pigs were killed in the crash. The uninjured pigs were off loaded to a second trailer and transported to the Indiana State Fairgrounds where they were held until another trailer from the trucking company could arrive and complete the transport. The load of pigs originated from South Carolina and was destined for Iowa.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Wayne Township Fire, Marion County Animal Control and Zores Towing.

The effected ramp was closed or restricted for approximately six hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage cleared. The investigation is continuing and no citations have been issued at this time.

Investigating Officer: Trooper Neal Beiriger, Indiana State Police

Assisting Agencies: Wayne Township Fire, Marion County Animal Control and Zores Towing.
