One person has been charged and a fugitive is on the run following a 14-mile chase in the Sugar Hill-Zion Hill Road area Thursday night.
Deputy Jennifer Trantham of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Kristen Sierra Walker, 18, of Bat Cave Road in Marion, with misdemeanor resisting arrest. Walker was a passenger in the vehicle.
The driver of the automobile, 24-year-old Christopher Dwayne Lawing, of Rockhouse Road in Marion, is wanted for felony fleeing to elude arrest in connection with the chase. He also has outstanding warrants for a probation violation, larceny of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering a motor vehicle and injury to personal property.
At approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, McDowell deputies responded to Cedar Drive in reference to a report of people shooting into houses. Lawing was believed to be one of the suspects.

The driver led Walker and other authorities on a 14 ½-mile chase from Cedar Drive to Zion Hill Road, Sugar Hill Road, Montford Cove Road, Old Fort-Sugar Hill Road, back onto Zion Hill to Nix Creek Road, Lytle Mountain Road and Henry McCall Road. The automobile chase ended when Lawing drove the truck onto a logging road off Henry McCall and was forced to stop for a fallen tree.
Lawing fled into the woods on foot. A search by the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Police Department and N.C. Highway Patrol Thursday night was unsuccessful.
Walker was arrested at the scene. A second female in the truck was not charged.
Lawing is described as a white male who stands 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs 128 pounds. He has blonde hair and hazel eyes.
