Three Lafayette Detectives Attend Homicide Investigation School
Lafayette-Three detectives from the Lafayette State Police Post attended a five day seminar on homicide investigation which included investigative tactics, handling the media and constitutional litigations.
Master Trooper Detectives Matthew “Jay” Harper and Tom Minnicus along with Trooper Detective Gregg Edwards attended the seminar which was held at the Lafayette Post. The detectives learned techniques in managing and evaluating crime scenes, death notifications, different investigative tactics, developing cold case leads and preparation for testimony and trial. The purpose of the class was to provide “in the field “instruction from the “side of the badge to the side of the scalpel to the side of the gavel.”
The seminar was instructed by three highly respected individuals in the field of criminal justice. Lou Tessmann is a 25 year lawman, who has conducted thousands of interviews and has obtained over 80 homicide convictions in his career. Jeff Pavletic is a Chief Deputy States Attorney, who has 20 years of extensive trial experience which includes over 150 prosecutions in homicide and violent crimes. Dr. Manuel Montez, MD is a Lake Forest, IL based physician, forensic pathologist and teaching instructor, is a recognized expert in crime scene forensics, autopsy and death certifications.
“The class will help our detectives improve upon their investigative and interview techniques when doing future death investigation in the Lafayette District” states First Sergeant Bryan Harper, who is the District Investigative Commander.
