ISP Investigating Police Involved Shooting in Marion

Marion – The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Marion Police Department, is investigating a police involved shooting in which a Marion, IN, man was shot and injured.

Preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Detective Mike Tarrh revealed that, this morning, at approximately 4:34 a.m., officers from the Marion Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance, with multiple people in the street, at 2805 South Boot Street, in Marion. As a Marion police officer was approaching the area he purportedly witnessed a man, later identified as Chris Cook, 26, Marion, IN, walking near 30th Street and Boot Street. The officer exited his police car to speak with Cook. At that point, Cook allegedly ran away. The officer gave chase on foot.

Cook refused the officer’s directives to stop and led the officer on an approximately two block foot pursuit. During the chase, the officer allegedly observed Cook holding a handgun. The officer, on multiple occasions, purportedly ordered Cook to drop the gun and display his hands. Instead, Cook allegedly made a motion as if turning towards the officer. The officer, fearing Cook was attempting to turn and shoot at him, fired one shot from his police issued nine millimeter Glock handgun. Cook was struck in the lower right torso.
.
Cook was transported by helicopter to a Ft. Wayne hospital. He is listed in serious condition. No one else was injured during the confrontation.

Further investigation revealed that Cook was stopped before he was able to fire any rounds at the police officer.

The Marion police officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard operating procedure for the Marion Police Department as it relates to an on duty shooting incident involving their officers.

All information will be forwarded to the Grant County Prosecutors Office upon completion of Detective Tarrh’s investigation.
