Motorcycle Safety DUI Saturation Patrol results from Saturday December 12, 2009
Chula Vista - Officers from the Chula Vista Police Department conducted a Motorcycle DUI Saturation Patrol on Saturday December 12, 2009 within the City of Chula Vista.
This DUI Saturation Patrol was aimed at increasing public awareness, decreasing the number of drivers who drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs as well as insuring drivers have a valid driver's license
The focus of this weekend’s operation was motorcycle safety. Motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise in California, increasing 175 percent statewide in the last decade, from 204 killed in 1998 to 560 killed in 2008. Extra officers were on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcycles. Officers attempted to crack down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists, and other vehicle drivers, that result in far too many motorcycle collisions, injuries and deaths.
During the operation, traffic stops were conducted on 73 vehicles and an additional 3 motorcyclists. 2 motorcyclists and 3 other persons in vehicles were evaluated for driving under the influence, 3 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, 5 vehicles were impounded for the driver being suspended or unlicensed and a total of 31 citations were issued. Due to the weather conditions, officers focused on general DUI enforcement as there were not many motorcyclists riding in the rain.
The Chula Vista Police Department is continuing its efforts to keep our community safe by detecting and deterring impaired drivers. The Chula Vista Police Department is asking for the public’s continued assistance throughout the year to Report Drunk Drivers - Call 9-1-1.
Funding for this operation was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety though the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
