LASD Academy Class 402 Graduates at Biscailuz Center. Last Grad Ceremony Presided by Sheriff Scott

Twenty-four female and thirty-eight male Deputy Sheriffs, as well as nine male and one female Police Officers from the Culver City, Inglewood, Los Angeles School, Monterey Park and Pasadena Police Departments, graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Training Academy in Los Angeles during ceremonies held Friday morning, November 14, 2014, at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy.

Duane Preimsberger, Retired Assistant Sheriff of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, delivered inspirational remarks to the graduates and their guests.

As part of the graduation, a badge-pinning ceremony was conducted, with the new Deputies and Officers receiving their badges from a family member or loved one.  After receiving their graduation certificates, the graduates were officially sworn in as peace officers by Sheriff John Scott.

In a special segment of the ceremony, Deputy Derek Edward Hernandez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was named the Honor Recruit.  This award is given to the recruit who achieves the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period.  Deputy Jennifer Bo McKay also of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was named the Academic Recruit for graduating with the highest academic scores.

Academy Class #402 dedicated their Colors Run to the memory of Deputy James M. Murphy, father of graduating Sheriff’s recruit, Ernest Murphy.  Deputy James M. Murphy retired in March, 2011, after 22 years of dedicated service.  While battling cancer, he passed away on September 21, 2014, just one month before the Colors Run.

The ceremony for Academy Class #402 is the second graduation at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy since its recent renovation and rededication, and the first Academy class to attend a complete course of training there since Class #220 in 1984.
