Advisory

WARNING! Telephonic scams threaten warrant arrests and attempt to extort cash.

Recent telephone scams have become common again in the Shasta County area. As you may already be aware, other allied agencies have put out similar information recently to their communities. This past week, citizens of Anderson have been overwhelmed with telephone scams attempting to extort money. The most common scam goes something like this: The caller will make up a story about you owing back taxes or financial penalties to the IRS. They will tell you that there has been a warrant issued for your arrest and they will be sending a team of law enforcement to arrest you and put you in jail for up to six months. Of course, they will tell you at some point to avoid being arrested you can post a percentage of the amount to an account or mail a check.

If the resident is not home at the time of the attempted fraudlent call the scam artists will leave a message on a machine and provide a call back number. If you happen to call this number they will be able to pull up your name and some information based on the caller id and then go into the scam story.

Under no circumstance should you provide any identity information, social security number, or account information to any unknown source or solicitation. Protect your personal information at all times and avoid be a victim of fraud and deceit.

Contact your local law enforcment with any information related to these types of scams.
