SMPD Detectives Have Made an Arrest Regarding the Suspicious Person Reported At San Mateo High School
In response to the three reports this week of a suspicious person in the area of San Mateo High School, SMPD conducted a plain clothes operation in and around the school campus today in order to ensure the safety of the faculty and students, as well as an attempt to locate the suspect. At approximately 9:30 AM, surveillance teams noticed a male driving alone in the area of the school in a white four door sedan. Investigators began to follow the vehicle and stopped it a few blocks from the high school. The driver, Gary Fong, was subsequently arrested after being positively identified as being involved in the first two reported incidents at San Mateo High School.
Subsequent investigation by detectives indicates that Fong is not likely responsible for the third reported incident at the adult school. That investigation will continue and we anticipate release of a forensic sketch of that suspect in the coming days.
The successful conclusion of this investigation is indicative of the strong collaborative efforts of the San Mateo Police Department, the San Mateo Union High School District, and the San Mateo-Foster City School District. SMPD would also like to say thank you for the quick response by local media outlets to publicize this case in a timely manner to educate the public and help us ensure the safety of our schools.
Lastly, we would again remind everyone to continue educating our children and teenagers about how to protect themselves from strangers, while empowering them with the courage to immediately report anyone or anything that scares them or makes them uncomfortable to someone they trust.
