New Downtown Nixle Service

WHAT: New Downtown Communication Service through Nixle

WHEN: Immediately

DEPARTMENT CONTACT: Officer Caleb Kemp 781-7765 or [email protected]

The San Luis Obispo Police Department in cooperation with the San Luis Obispo Downtown Association has begun utilizing a new communications service effective 10/1/14. This service allows us to send important community information directly to business owners using the latest Nixle technology, which is a secure means of transferring information.

The “Nixle” program is currently being utilized as a real time information sharing platform by over 7000 cities and municipalities. Under the umbrella of Nixle, we have created a group specific to the downtown area. By joining Nixle, the business owners can become part of the “SLOPD DT GROUP” and they will have the ability to get real time information regarding in progress thefts, assaults or other crimes occurring in the downtown area. This program will enable those signed on to the group to be part of a safer, better informed downtown group of citizens and business owners.

Officer Caleb Kemp is currently assigned as the daytime bicycle officer in the downtown area of San Luis Obispo and will oversee the initiation of this program. The purpose of this news release is to inform everyone of this service and to invite you to participate in an exciting new program. This service is being offered by the San Luis Obispo Police Department in cooperation with your Downtown Association.

The service is secure, reliable and easy to use for this group.

The Nixle Community Information Service allows us to create and publish messages to be delivered to subscribers instantly via cell phone text message and/or email. Notifications can also be accessed online at Nixle’s web site at www.nixle.com.

Messages may include “Shoplifting just occurred at…” or “Increased use of counterfeit $100 bills at downtown stores” or “Be on the lookout for…” as well as other relevant safety and community event information.

The messages can be sent specifically to residents registered within a ¼ mile radius, giving them the opportunity to receive trustworthy information relevant only to their neighborhood. Residents decide from which local agencies they want to receive information. Subscribers can also choose the way in which alerts are received, whether it is by email, text message, or over the web.

Business owners located in the downtown area can immediately begin receiving pertinent information via text message, email, and web by registering at www.nixle.com.

To join the “Downtown Group” utilizing your smartphone, send a text to the number: 888777, and in the body, type the key word (all caps/no spaces): SLOPDDTGROUP. Hit send and wait for the immediate response for direction.

Note: You may opt out of the service at any time.

We are very excited to have you experience it for yourself!
