Daughter Arrested for Exploitation of Elderly Mother
Vermillion County—This afternoon, the daughter of a Clinton nursing home resident submitted herself to the Vermillion County Jail, to answer a Vermillion County Circuit Court arrest warrant for one count of Exploitation of an Endangered Adult.
Arrested: Sherry L. Furgerson, age 58, of Terre Haute, IN.
Charge: (1) County of Exploitation of an Endangered Adult
In March of this year, the Clinton Police Department requested the Indiana State Police investigate allegations of financial improprieties involving Furgerson and her elderly mother. A family member notified the Clinton Police that Furgerson, acting as a co-guardian of her mother, was using her mother’s finances for personal use instead of paying the nursing home facility. The investigation was assigned to ISP Detective Don Anglin.
During Detective Anglin’s investigation, he determined that Sherry Furgerson was appointed co-guardian of her mother in December 2012 and removed from co-guardianship in August of 2014. As of March 2014, Furgerson was behind nearly $20,000 in payments to the nursing home facility. However, around this time, she did make a $10,000 payment to the facility in an apparent attempt to update the account. Additionally, during the period of December 2012 to May 2014, Furgerson is alleged to have made numerous monetary withdrawals totaling $13,041.27 from her mother’s financial account, allegedly using the funds for personal use instead of payments to the nursing home facility. Furgerson has made additional payments to the facility, but as of September 2014, Furgerson still owed $3,923.34 to the facility for her mother’s care during the time Furgerson was co-guardian.
Assisting Detective Anglin were ISP Detective Tony Guinn and Master Trooper Gary Winters.
I do not have a book-in photo and Furgerson is the correct spelling.
Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
