Traffic Enforcement Operation Reduces Traffic Collisions

During the month of October Los Banos Police Officers hit the streets with the goal in mind of reducing traffic collisions and educating drivers. Police officers issued 463 traffic citations this month, in what we are pleased to report was a very successful zero tolerance traffic campaign.

The Department saw an overall decrease of 20.5 percent when comparing the number of traffic collisions, September to October.

“Traffic is one of the biggest complaints we receive at the police department. We will continue these operations in addition to our regular enforcement efforts. No one likes receiving a traffic ticket, but the intent of the citation is to correct the offense, making our streets safer. If a driver receives a speeding ticket, they are more likely to slow down in the future.
- Jason Hedden, Police Commander

**Original Press Release - September 26, 2014**

October Traffic Enforcement Operation During the month of October you will see an increase in officers patrolling the streets of Los Banos in an effort to increase driver awareness and traffic safety.

The Department completed two similar month-long operations and we considered them to be a success. This operation is being funded by a federal grant from the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This will allow the Department to deploy additional officers with maximum enforcement without impacting the city’s general fund budget.

“The idea behind this “zero-tolerance” traffic campaign is to get drivers use to slowing down and driving safely. Halloween is approaching and a number of children will be out trick-or-treating, many of them wearing dark costumes.”

-Jason Hedden, Commander

We’ve received some complaints in specific areas and they will be targeted heavily, but officers will be deployed throughout the city to conduct enforcement during all hours of the day.

The Department plans on utilizing all resources available to make sure there is a positive impact while at the same time educating the public about the rules of the road.
