Explosion and structure fire on Sunnyvale Avenue in Walnut Creek

On 10/31/14 at 0959 hours, Consolidated Fire Department (CFD) and the Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) received numerous phone calls regarding an explosion and residential structure fire on Sunnyvale Avenue. Two critically injured males were located during the evacuation of the property. The property consists of several six unit townhouse structures. The two males were transported via helicopter to the UC Davis Burn Center. The two subjects (both in their 30’s) are the residents of the unit that was destroyed. One nearby resident had minor injuries as a result of the explosion.

CFD and WCPD immediately began an investigation and evidence was located showing the explosion was the result of a marijuana/hash oil drug extraction manufacturing process. The explosion left the six unit complex uninhabitable. The adjacent complex suffered major structural damage as well.

CFD and WCPD Investigators continue the investigation. At this time, both subjects are still listed as being in critical condition in the Burn ICU Department at UCD. Red Cross set up a shelter nearby and are tending to those who have been displaced.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-5844 or Detective Jeha at (925) 256-3518.
