Halloween Weekend Safety Tips

Oakland, CA – The Oakland Police Department realizes that this holiday weekend will be busy with many planned events. Our priority is public safety; therefore, we have increased staffing citywide. We are also directing resources to prevent illegal car stunts and dangerous driving. We want to ensure that everyone has a safe weekend.

Chief Sean Whent says, “We recognize that there will be many events held throughout the City, with traditional gatherings to celebrate. We are committed to increasing officer presence to assist the community in having a happy and safe Halloween.”
Recommended Safety Tips

Motorists
Exercise extreme caution when driving. Be mindful of your speed and watch out for pedestrians. There will be increased pedestrian traffic throughout the City.

Trick-or-Treaters
• Wear a costume that is easy to walk in, that allows you to see clearly, and is visible at night.
• Parents and older children, carry a flashlight with you.
• If possible, trick-or-treat while it is still light outside.
• If you go at night, make sure that your costume is light in color or has reflective tape.

Adults
• Welcome trick-or-treaters with lights on.
• Report any suspicious or criminal activity to Oakland Police Department immediately (call 777-3333).
• Do not give children homemade or unwrapped treats.
