Telephone / Jury Duty Scam

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin is warning county residents about a phone scam involving claims that citizens are in trouble for failing to report for jury duty.

Callers are stating to be deputies from the sheriff’s office, are asking for $500 to recall the warrant and are providing instructions on how to submit the money. Sheriff Entrekin said his office does not operate this way.

“It’s an old technique,” Entrekin said, “but criminals are still using phone scams in an attempt to gain access to people’s money and personal information. Under no circumstances should anyone give out personal information unless the call is initiated by you.”

“We want Etowah County residents to be aware that scammers are always looking for victims,” he said. “The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office will never call you asking for money to recall a warrant.”
