Warning about ongoing "IRS scam" that many are falling victim to.
At the North Brunswick Police Department, we are again getting many reports of residents getting calls from the "IRS scam". In these incidents, people receive a phone call from an individual representing himself as an Agent of the IRS. The "Agent" speaks to the prospective victim kindly, and warns them of an impending IRS fine or penalty. He offers the victim to take care of the issue over the phone, as long as the victim provides their account information. In this case, the account is then accessed, and thousands of dollars are lost. In some cases, the caller has the victim send him a cashier's check for the amount, again usually thousands of dollars. The phone number being called from will also usually appear on caller ID as a Washington DC area number.
The actual IRS does not conduct their business in this manner. They will not contact you by phone for money or to assess penalties. Should you receive one of these calls, please disconnect immediately. Do NOT provide any personal or account information, and do NOT send any money or checks to these individuals. This scam is very popular, and has many victims. Please do not be one of them! Thank you.
