Some tips to enjoy Halloween and stay safe. These are general guidelines and not based on any specific threat or incident.
-Stay off the roadways, and stay visible. If wearing a dark colored costume, add bright or reflective material to be visible at dusk. Consider bringing a flashlight to light your path as well as being visible to others.
-Advise children not to eat any candy without first being examined by an adult. Do not ingest any candy that can not be identified or is not is its original packaging.
-Keep choking hazards away from small children, including hard candies and toys.
-Have children accompanied by an adult at all times, and have children return home by the curfew time set by the Township, which is 8:00pm.
-Make sure to explain to children the need to look both ways before crossing. We understand that getting to the house across the street with the big candy bars is important, but its not worth it if there is a car coming. Use crosswalks and corners whenever possible.
-As always, never go with a stranger. This is includes going into a strangers home. Explain to children that if a stranger calls them in to a car or residence, not to go. Wait outside with a group. If a child feels that they are being forced, advise them to yell and attract attention and return to an adult.
-If your child is going with another adult to trick or treat or to an event, please make sure to get a phone number and address for the responsible adult. This will make finding the child much easier if necessary. It is also important to know the route your child will be taking while out.
-Be familiar with the areas you are visiting.
