Crystal Lake Police Department reminders for a Happy & Safe Halloween...

The Crystal Lake Police Department wants to remind residents of some simple things to keep you and your family safe this Halloween.

Decorations:
*Keep candles and jack o' lanterns away from landings and doorsteps, where costumes could brush against the flame.
*Remove obstacles from lawns, steps, and porches when expecting trick-or-treaters.
*When indoors, keep candles and jack o' lanterns away from curtains, decorations, and other items that could ignite. Do not leave burning candles unattended.

Motorists:
*Due to the number of children out on the street on Halloween evening, motorists should be very careful driving along city streets, especially in neighborhoods, during designated trick-or-treat hours.
*Avoid distracting activities.
*Remember that excited children may dart out into traffic at any time without warning.
*Drive with your headlights on, even during daylight trick-or-treat hours, so that your vehicle is more visible to children.

Costumes:
*For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks also should be light-colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
*Children should carry flashlights to be able to see and to be seen.
Outdoor Safety:
*Trick-or-treaters should use sidewalks instead of the street whenever possible and always cross at crosswalks.
*Remind children to look both ways before crossing the street.

Treats:
*Remind your children not to eat any treats before an adult has examined them carefully for evidence of tampering.

In Illinois, registered sex offenders on parole or probation are prohibited from distributing candy or other items to anyone under 18 years of age.

Please bring your children to Downtown Crystal Lake for the Halloween Handout!
Participating merchants throughout Downtown Crystal Lake open their doors to invite costumed children 12 and under to receive a treat between 3pm and 5pm.

Just a reminder the City of Crystal Lake Trick-or-Treat hours are from 3pm to 7pm.
