Deadly Week for California Law Enforcement Officers
The El Segundo Police Department’s thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of four California law enforcement officers that were killed in the past week.
On October 24, 2014, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and his partner were approaching a suspicious vehicle when the occupant fired multiple rounds at the deputies killing Deputy Oliver. The suspects fled the scene and began a violent crime spree by carjacking several citizens of their vehicles in a nearby neighborhood, shooting one in the torso.

On October 24, 2014, Placer County Sheriff’s Detective Michael Davis, Jr. and his partner Deputy Jeff Davis (no relation) were taking part in a massive manhunt for the murderers of Deputy Oliver. Detective Davis and Deputy Davis spotted the suspect’s vehicle pulled over to the side of the road. The male suspect immediately opened fire with a rifle wounding Deputy Davis and killing Detective Michael Davis.

On October 28, 2014, Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko was conducting a traffic stop on the 101 Freeway near the Lewis Road exit in Camarillo. A vehicle approached at a high rate of speed striking Deputy Kostiuchenko and side-swiping his car. Deputy Kostiuchenko was killed in the collision. The driver continued on at a high rate of speed before crashing off the roadway near Las Posas Road and he was arrested by the California Highway Patrol for felony DUI.

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face
"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years
The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind
I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last
