APD investigating suspicious activity from door-to-door solicitors.

The Amarillo Police Department has received a few complaints about some recent door-to-door solicitors. Both calls indicated that two B/M’s were first checking for unlocked doors then would knock or ring the door bell. When the homeowner opened the door, they claimed to be selling vacuum cleaners. The males did not have a vacuum with them at the time they approached the door, but said they had one in their vehicle. As the homeowner told them they were not interested, they proceeded to the next house, again checking the door first then knocking to see if someone was home. The males were seen in dark colored Suburban possibly bearing Colorado license plates. One of the reports came from the River Road area while the other was in the Puckett West area. Anyone doing door-to-door solicitations are required by city ordinance to obtain a solicitors permit from the Police Department. At this time Amarillo Police Department has not issued a solicitors permit to anyone selling vacuum cleaners or anyone with a Colorado license plate matching the vehicle description. If you have someone approach your home selling some item, first ask to see their permit. If they do not have a permit please contact the Police Department. Even if they do have a solicitor’s permit, that only means they have met the cities requirements, it is NOT an endorsement of a product or service.
