Press Release

The following individual was charged today in Madison County Circuit Court with a felony charge of RETAIL THEFT UNDER $300.00 (SECOND SUBSEQUENT OFFENSE):

AGE: 18

On Sunday, October 26th, 2014, at approximately 12:50 p.m., a deputy was fueling his car at a gas station in Granite City. During the course of finalizing the purchase inside the establishment, a clerk prompted the deputy’s attention to a subject who just left the premises suspected to have stolen a food item.
The deputy immediately observed the subject walking away from the business and was able to make contact with him. During the deputy’s initial contact with the subject, James Ellis, he turned over the item in question that was removed from the store. As the deputy attempted to place Ellis under arrest, Ellis swung his arm at the deputy and struck the deputy in the face and Ellis began to flee. The deputy began to pursue Ellis on foot. Moments later the deputy and other nearby assisting patrol units located Ellis. He was taken into custody without any further resistance. Other stolen food items were found on his person and also determined to have been stolen. The deputy did not sustain any serious injuries during the struggle.
Ellis was transported to the Madison County Jail, where he was held pending a formal review of facts by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. Ellis was later charged with felony Retail Theft in connection with the investigation and misdemeanor charges of resisting a peace officer and criminal damage to property for equipment that was broken during the struggle with the officer. Ellis was eligible for the enhanced second subsequent felony offense, due to a 2013 conviction for theft out of Madison County.
The warrant and criminal information on Ellis was issued by the Honorable Judge Richard Tognarelli. Bond was set at $15,000.00.
