Putnamville Post Offers Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is fast approaching and this time of year brings out children and parents in large numbers. In order to make this special night safe and fun for all, your Indiana State Police would like to offer the following safety tips:

Costumes-

• Make sure costumes are not too long; children could trip and fall with long costumes.
• Using make-up is preferred over wearing masks. Masks can obstruct vision which can be unsafe. If a mask is worn, children should be encouraged to take the mask off as they walk between homes.
• Bright colored clothing should be worn or put reflective tape on dark clothing.

Trick or Treating-

• Children should only visit familiar homes that have the porch light on
• Trick or treat during daylight hours or carry a flashlight after dark
• Younger children should walk in groups with older children or parents should accompany smaller children on their route.
• Children should never enter a home; wait on the porch for the homeowner to hand out treats.
• Only trick or treat during hours designated by the community

Eating Treats-

• Children should not eat any treats until after they get home
• Parents should inspect their children’s treats before allowing the children to eat them.
• Only eat candy wrapped in its original wrapper and inspect all fruit and other foods thoroughly before allowing children to eat it.

Motorists are reminded that they should also do their part in making Halloween safe for children. Make sure to drive cautiously including driving below the posted speed limit while in town during trick or treat hours. Avoid talking on a cell phone or other distracting activities. Remember, excited children may dart out into traffic at any time without warning. Drive with your headlights on even during the daylight trick or treat hours so your vehicle is more visible to children. Have a happy and safe Halloween.
