Merrillville Man Critically Injured in Motorcycle Crash

LaPorte County-A motorcycle crash, this Saturday, October 25, 2014 evening, sent a Merrillville man to the hospital with critical injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Rogelio Escutia revealed that at approximately 6:18 p.m., witnesses stated that a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by Kenneth C. Heming, 47 of Merrillville, was west bound on I-94 near the 44 mile marker (this is approximately one mile west of the Michigan State Line) weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. Heming came up on a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Rachel R. Williams, 28 of Grand Junction, Michigan, in the left lane and hit the rear of the Malibu. Heming was thrown from his motorcycle and came to rest in the left lane. He was not wearing a helmet.

Heming was taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City with life threatening head injuries. He was later ambulanced to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Heming was cited for Operating While Intoxicated (tested .18% BAC), Speed too Fast to Avoid a Collision, and Unsafe Lane Movement. Family has been notified.

Williams who was wearing her seat belt was not injured.

All lanes were closed west bound until approximately 6:58 p.m., when the far right lane and shoulder were re-opened. The left two lanes were closed until 9:20 p.m. for reconstruction of the crash.
