October 23rd – 31st is Red Ribbon Week! Wear a red ribbon and SAY NO TO DRUGS!

Red Ribbon Week is October 23rd to October 31st. The goal of Red Ribbon Week is to educate youth about drug awareness. Red Ribbon Week is recognized nationally. The Red Ribbon Week Campaign started in 1985 to memorialize DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. Camarena was an agent fighting the war on drugs. He was killed in the line of duty on February 7, 1985. He was kidnapped and his body was found in Mexico a month later. In honor of Camarena’s death, his friends, family and colleagues began wearing red ribbons in his honor and to fight the battle against illegal drugs. Different coalitions adopted the symbol of Camarena's memory, the red ribbon.

The murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena angered parents and youth. Communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
