Scam Alert

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has received several complaints, similar to ones received by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office in the last week, from a caller identifying themselves as a detective with the sheriff’s office.

In the reported incidents, the caller has informed the resident there is a warrant for their arrest or a family member or they missed jury duty and need to provide immediate financial compensation to avoid arrest. The caller directs the resident to purchase a “Money Pak” card and provide the caller with the serial numbers or requests that the resident meet the caller at a designated location.

Residents are reminded never to meet a stranger or trust someone who calls requesting money. Residents should confirm the status of their family members and verify the legitimacy of the caller.
