UPDATE- West Valley Detention Center Investigation Regarding Mistreatment of Inmates

DATE: Friday, April 11, 2014 UPDATE – October 22, 2014

INCIDENT: Mistreatment of Inmates

LOCATION: West Valley Detention Center

SUMMARY:
Between Monday, October 20th, 2014, and Tuesday the 21st, four deputy sheriffs involved in the West Valley Detention Center investigation were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the administrative investigation into mistreatment of inmates at the West Valley Detention Center.

In March, Sheriff John McMahon ordered an internal investigation into the allegations.
A special task force was created to conduct the investigation. The complexity of an investigation such as this can be lengthy but will ensure a thorough investigation is completed.

The FBI is the primary investigative agency in regards to any possible criminal charges.

The law prohibits the release of details regarding personnel investigations and the Sheriff’s Department can not release the names of involved personnel.

San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon has ordered an internal investigation into allegations of mistreatment of inmates at the West Valley Detention Center by members of the department.

On Wednesday, March 5, members of the Sheriff’s Department command staff received information regarding possible misconduct by department personnel at the West Valley Detention Center and immediately launched an investigation. As department officials delved into the issue deeper, they learned of a similar inquiry by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). By Thursday, the Sheriff’s Department and the FBI were in full cooperation in order to ensure a comprehensive investigation is completed.

As of April 8, 2014, three deputies assigned to the West Valley Detention Center are no longer employed by the Sheriff’s Department.

“I will not tolerate any misconduct by department personnel,” San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said. “These allegations are being taken very seriously and this department is determined to get answers.”

The investigation is ongoing, and no further information can be released at this time.
