Sand Scorpions ORV Club donates 47 man hours to clean Moses Lake Sand Dunes

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (22OCT2014) -- The Sand Scorpions ORV Club conducted their annual Moses Lake Sand Dunes Yellow Zone cleanup this past Saturday, October 4, 2014.

Members of the Sand Scorpions volunteered over 47 man hours to collect about 4 yards of garbage and trash scattered throughout the area of the Moses Lake Sand Dunes known as the “Yellow Zone”. The garbage was disposed of with Dumpsters® provided by grant funding through the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, which also provides grant funding for maintenance, operation, and enforcement of the Moses Lake Sand Dunes through the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The Yellow Zone cleanup by the ORV club signals the annual closing of the area, which have made it an annual event for over 20 years. The Yellow Zone is seasonally closed from October 1 to July 1 for nesting of migratory birds as well as many other species like the leopard frog, which only exist in Washington in the Moses Lake Sand Dunes.

The Yellow Zone is nestled between the north end of Potholes Reservoir and the Moses Lake Sand Dunes to the east. It’s owned by the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife with small portions belonging to the Department of Natural Resources.
