FAKE IRS SCAM CALLERS AT IT AGAIN

Lowell-The Indiana State Police at Lowell would like to warn everyone to be aware of telephone calls from individuals claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in an effort to get money and personal/financial information.

These scam artists keep going at this con because they know they can play up on everyone’s fear of being called by the IRS. They are making threatening calls claiming to be from the IRS. They will typically tell a person that they owe a debt to the IRS and they must phone immediately or face a warrant/arrest if they do not.

They will then attempt to get financial information from the victims. They may also claim that a warrant or some other sort of summons has been issued and that authorities will take the person into custody soon if they don’t receive payment. Some of these callers have heavy accents using fake common names with fake IRS badge numbers. They also may know the last four digits of the victim’s social security number, make caller ID information appear as if the IRS is calling, send bogus IRS e-mails, or sometimes leave repeated messages to support their scam.

DO NOT give out any personal or financial information over the phone!! If you think you owe or think you owe Federal taxes call the IRS at 800-829-1040. If you don’t owe taxes, call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 800-366-4484. Consumers who want more information on this scam can see an alert at www.treasury.gov/togta.
