Water Emergency Tips to Prepare for Tropical Storm Ana

The Board of Water Supply (BWS) urges residents to be prepared and have their emergency kits ready. The kit should include at least one gallon of water, per person, per day for at least seven days, for drinking and sanitation purposes.

The easiest and most efficient way to prepare your emergency water supply is to take it from the tap. Use what you need to be prepared and use it wisely.

What to Do in a Storm
If a storm hits Oahu, causing a power outage, the following should be implemented:
• Stay tuned to news reports.
• During an electrical power outage keep water use to an absolute minimum. If electrical service has been disrupted, the outage will also affect BWS’s pumps and equipment.
o Immediately begin water conservation measures. Use water sparingly only for essentials needs: cooking, drinking and sanitation. Do not wash cars or water lawns.
o Turn off or disconnect any devices or fixtures that regularly draw water. Such devices include automatic icemakers and irrigation systems.

More emergency preparedness information and instructions on how to properly store water is available at www.boardofwatersupply.com.

The BWS is asking customers to stay tuned to news reports. The BWS is actively monitoring Tropical Storm Ana and is coordinating our emergency response effort with the City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management.
